February Colloquium
February 11, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Assistant Professor of Screen Studies at Clark University (and 2013 Syracuse English PhD) Gohar Siddiqui will join the colloquium next Friday, Feb. 11, at 2pm to deliver a talk “‘Lihaaf Maang Le/Ask for the Quilt:’ Gender and Sexuality in the Hindi Remake.” Prof Siddiqui describes the talk like this:
The talk will examine Bollywood remakes to discuss how different transnational contexts affect the translation of non-normative identity and desire. Dostana (India 2008) is a Bollywood remake of the Hollywood film, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (USA 2007), and Dedh Ishqiya (India 2014) forms a triad with Deepa Mehta’s film Fire (Canada/India 1996) and Ismat Chughtai’s story “Lihaaf/Quilt” (Pakistan 1942). The cross-cultural negotiations in remaking across industries like Hollywood/Bollywood as opposed to the triangulated relationship between the second set of non-mainstream texts are central to understanding the articulation of gender and sexuality in these films.
